Fish Health and Welfare Course – November 27th-28th, Stirling

Following success of this summer’s Course on Fish Health and Welfare in Stirling,
Europharma and Fishguard with cooperation of Stirling University Institute of Aquaculture are proud to announce :

The new edition of Fish Health and welfare course that would be taking place in November 27th – 28th  (two days course).

Audience and Objectives

This Training Course is aimed at both entry-level and experienced marine and fresh water husbandry staff and covers a wide range of fish stock health issues. There is no prior knowledge of fish health required and the lectures are organised to provide a spherical understanding of the major fish health challenges in Aquaculture today.
For this reason the course is also strongly suggested for fish farming companies staff that don’t participate directly in husbandry; understanding of the hands on production reality and challenges can enhance communication within the farming organisations by establishing the links and common language.

 

Day 1

Lifecycle and biology

First module of the course would told about necessary basics to understand fish biology and its relation to specific living environment. Lifecycle and production intensity, interventions and adaptation of physiology and behaviour.

Stress & Welfare

Most important single factor that is influencing fish health and welfare – stress. Its causing factors their mechanism, effect and how it can be minimalised or even eliminated would be discussed and presented in this part.

Disease vs health

How health problems starts, what can cause it and how to manage the risk of diseases influencing your production? This module would be explained by a fish vet specialist to understand what lays at the beginning of healthy fish going bad.

Immunology

A pinch of theory in arsenal that fish organism can utilize to fight pathogens and what most important how we can equipped and prepare it to fight potential dangers to encounter in further life.

Vaccination

Delivered by leading vaccination company this part would be describing practical way of increasing fish resistance to diseases – vaccination + all you ever wanted to asked but afraid to asked on it.

Epidemiology and records

Range and usage of treatments available for aquaculture industry. Legislative environment and use of Cascade. Environmental awareness and Food safety awareness. Understanding prescriptions, mixing instructions and practical following them.

Sampling

So you want to know if there is something potentially harmful to fish that you take care of? So test it… but how many samples should you take? How to sample and what is theoretical and feasible in practice way of getting best results. This module would put some light on it.

Medicinal products & treatments

Range and usage of treatments available for aquaculture industry. Legislative environment and use of Cascade. Environmental awareness and Food safety awareness. Understanding prescriptions, mixing instructions and practical following them.

 

Day 2

Parasitic, Bacterial, Viral, Fungal and Non-infectious diseases

This module would describe in depth pathogens, diseases and conditions that are potential and common threats in aquaculture. Ways to identify causes and main preventative strategies will be also discussed with reference to available diagnostic techniques.

Sampling practical

Participants in this module would have a chance to learn methods and do the practical sampling of fish. Skill useful for routine monitoring and specific purpose check of disease.

Role of vet support and Veterinary health plan

What is the role of veterinary care in fish farms? How vet can contribute to the success of your aquaculture operations?
What are regulations on veterinary care of fish site? Is veterinary support needed when fish are sick or at any other point of aquaculture production? This and any other questions you might have would be answered here by fish specialising vets.
